d) It is business and not a hobby

Most people assume that blogging is simple and just for jokers.

Yes, it could be true for bloggers who write 100-500 words blog posts all about themselves, their lifestyle and blah blah blah…

Such a blogging focus will never make you a full-time income online.

Bloggers who make money treat their blogs like any other business. For example, they perform SEO, social media marketing, create excellent and detailed blog posts among other serious endeavors.

Therefore, Building a successful blogging business takes starting one from scratch the right way and building it with the right blueprint. You can also check out this build your website guide for more information.

e) Trust and customer engagement

Here comes the real deal now. I know you know that customers only buy from people they trust, right?

For example, have you invested in the right theme, web hosting, social media management tools, web designer among other resources?

In summary, whether you shall earn money blogging will depend on the decisions you make about what to allow and what to let go of your blog.

In summary, if you build a blog the right way and perform all tips and tricks correctly, after six months, you should be making some money.

However, do not forget that this is not a general rule because traffic of new blogs keeps fluctuating.

Thus, give yourself at least one year or less before you transform your blog into a full time income business.

Secrets and facts about making money blogging

  • Making thousands, millions or even billions blogging will never be an overnight success. It takes handwork, persistence, and consistency to build a fulltime income from a blog.
  • There is no perfect time to monetize a blog-the earlier the better. In fact, monetize it from day one with affiliate links or any other method.
  • In the first one year or more your blogging income will not be stable-sometimes it will go high or low as your traffic keeps fluctuating. Thus, it takes some time to build a stable income from a blog.
  • You must be valuable/useful to make money blogging. Become a problem solver, and your readers will buy from you.
  • Making money blogging is all about having high site traffic from the right target audience who fit your niche, unique selling proposition, content and business model.
  • Every successful blogger will tell you that an email list is the most powerful tool you can use to make money online. “If you don’t have a list, you don’t have a business” Tony Robins.

What should you focus on as a new blogger?

Now that we are clear on these three important facts: a) bloggers make money, b) the amount of money you make depends on several factors and c) making money from a blog is not an overnight success story; I can finally tell you the truth.

Blogging is a gateway or bridge that will bring the right buyers to you.

Therefore, as a new blogger, your main focus should not be “how much money can you make blogging,” instead put more emphasis on creating content/products which will attract buyers to your site.

Bitter truth: No one will ever want to buy from you if you are not giving any value in exchange. Most importantly, they will never stick around long enough to allow you to transform them from visitors into buyers, subscribers, and your brand ambassadors if they get disappointed from the first encounter in your blog.

Note: Of course you should monetize your blog at all times, what I am trying to tell you is stop stressing over why you are not making millions at the beginning and begin to measure if you are building an engaged audience or not.

Choose your focus: Your blogging journey can be dull, lonely and discouraging at the beginning-every blogger starts there-the difference between those who give up and others who persevere till the riches come is one-having the right focus: money or your audience.

Wise and successful bloggers know that when they focus on building trust, listening, engaging and offering quality to their target audience, the money will eventually come in bulk.

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of polishing and perfecting several elements on your website/blog to make it more crawlable by search engines and user-friendly.

SEO is divided into two main categories: on page SEO and off page SEO.

On page SEO: All activities you will perform internally on your pages and posts to make them more search engine friendly, such as the use of keywords and producing great content among others.

Off page SEO: Are those external factors which search engines use to measure the worthiness of your blog, such as trust, authority, backlinks and social signals among others.

How to optimize blog posts for SEO in 8 ways

how-to-optimize-blog-posts-for-SEO-in-8-ways

1. Use long tail keywords

Types of keywords?

Keywords are word, phrases or terms which people enter in search engines to find information.

For example, someone using Google to find information on weight loss is likely to use the following search terms; weight loss tips, weight loss diet and weight loss exercises among others.

Thus, keywords can be broad topics/subjects, such as health or specific search phrases, such as fitness for pregnant women. This explains why keywords can be classified into three categories: head, body and long tail.

Characteristics Head/Seed Body/Middle Long Tail
1.     Length One-word generic terms 2-3 words phrases 3+ words search queries
2.     Search volume High Medium Low
3.     Competition High High to Medium Low
4.     CTR and conversion Low Low to Medium High
5.     Example “Business” “Online business.” “Online business ideas for beginners.”

Important: As a blogger, especially if your blog is relatively new, you should focus on using long tail keywords because they have low competition, high CTR and represent searchers intent.

Therefore, learning how to write SEO friendly blog posts begins with knowing how to find and use long tail keywords the right way in your posts.

2. Practice internal and external linking to related content

Internal links: These are hyperlinks pointing back to relevant content within the same domain. For instance, if I am writing a new blog post on keyword research, I can link to a related article on keyword research tools written earlier.

External/outbound links: These are links which you receive from other domains who refer back to content on your blog. For example, if another blogger adds a link to this post in their content, then that will be an external link pointing back to my domain.

This is a must-do tip on how to optimize blog posts for SEO because of the following reasons;

  • Internal linking helps search engines and users to navigate through your blog. Organized and easy site architecture makes your blog user-friendly and crawlable.
  • Internal linking spreads SEO benefits to all pages/posts in your blog.
  • External links, especially those from domains with high page and domain authority helps you to build credibility and trust.
  • External links from other sites encourage their audience to participate and engage with your content.

Serious bloggers who want to learn how to optimize blog posts for SEO do not ignore this familiar phrase, “content is king.”

You do not expect search engines to rank your content if it lacks the following characteristics.

  • Keyword rich
  • Should be Long form-your blog post should be at least 1000 or more.
  • Useful and relevant-meaning that it should be timely, informative and solves a problem.
  • Readable-use of right font, grammar, line spacing, subheading and other typography and content organization factors.
  • Original and not copied anywhere else.

5. Have an SEO/ user-friendly blog

No matter how much you optimize individual blog posts, as long as they exist in a poor site, all that is in vain.

There are many ways your blog can lack the elements of an SEO friendly site;

a) Slow page speed

Slow page speed can be caused by several factors, such as poor web hosting, large images, and code density among others.

You can use several tools, such as GTmetrixPingdom and Google Page Speed Insights to test if your blog is slow.

Studies show that a web page bounce rate increases by 106% if it loads for more than 5 seconds. Thus, slow page speed discourages readers

Therefore, to be on the safer side, your blog should load at a speed of below 30 seconds, if not use this speed optimization guide to improve it.

BlueHostSiteGround and A2Hosting are some of the best web host providers who will give you fast loading servers and other tools. I use SiteGround, and you can find out ten reasons why their hosting is just fantastic.

b) Not responsive

Does your blog layout adjust well to different devices, desktop, mobile, tablets and laptops among others?

Remember that all your blog post readers will use different devices to visit your blog post and this is why this tip on how to optimize blog posts is very important.

The responsiveness of your theme largely depends on the theme you use. Below are two theme recommendations for WordPress bloggers.

Premium/paid Theme Alternative

Divi Theme from Elegant Themes

The package costs $89 per year and it comes with the following additions.

Bloom: A free plugin you can use to create opt-in forms to collect email subscribers.

Monarch: A plugin you can use to add social media sharing and follow buttons to your blog.

Extra: A famous theme you can use to create newspapers, magazines and other multipurpose publications.

The Divi  builder: A plugin you can use to build beautiful looking pages and post layouts.

This theme can be used alongside the following free options.

Social share: A plugin you can use to add social media sharing and follow buttons to your blog.

c) Not mobile friendly

80% of your blog readers will access your post through mobile devices.

Moreover, Google and other search engines have rolled out the mobile first index campaign, which prioritizes sites that are mobile friendly.

Therefore, you must take care of mobile SEO to boost your blog SEO.

d) Lacks structured architecture

A structured site is suitable for usability and crawlability by search engines because it is easy to find information.

For example, as a blogger, you should practice excellent uses of post categories and tags in your blog posts.

Also, your pages, posts, menus, and widgets should be grouped into related elements and not any random pages.

Backlinks are powerful off page SEO signals which will improve your rankings and search traffic.

After mentioning influencers, you can go a step further to send them a pitch letting them know that you have a new blog post where you mentioned them, see template below.

1. Build your blogging idea/plan

I am not teaching you how to start a blogging hobby or side hustle. Instead, I want you to learn how to create a blog which generates income.

Every profitable business begins with a plan; even your blog should have one.

Four questions you must answer before you start a blog and make money from it

What market, need/problem will your blog exist to solve? And how will you solve that problem?

Every blog on the internet serves a specific function and most narrow down their focus to one or two niches/subject areas.

Learning how to start a blog and make money begins with clearly understanding the purpose your blog will serve. See examples below;

Problogger.com: Niche/market: Blogging, The problem it solves: Help bloggers who want to start a blog and grow a stable income online.

Makesenseofcents: Niche/market: Finance and personal income, Need/problem it solves: Offer information which helps people to manage and budget their finances better.

Who are the customers/ clients your blog will serve?

There are many types of users on the internet. For example, in the women category, there are girls, single women, teenage daughters, mothers, pregnant women and college girls among others.

Therefore, one single blog cannot exist to solve the needs of all women.

Thus, you must identify the specific audience personas you want to serve or reach/reach with your blog when learning how to start a blog and make money with it.

You must know their demographics, goals, where they buy, other blogs they follow, where they spend their time online and who they are.

  • Search volume: Does the idea has keywords with enough search volume?
  • Gather feedback: Create surveys with data gathering tools, such as Typeform and Survey Monkey, or use social media polls to ask your target customers, friends and family if the idea is worthy.
  • Affiliate networks or e-commerce site: Are products in that niche fast moving or best sellers?

Examples: sproutmentor.com, problogger.com, smartpassiveincome.com, Linux.org, and yahoo.co.uk among others.

I hope that you have noticed that there are many types of domain name extensions, such as .com, .org, .net, .edu, /Gov and .info among others.

Type of  Domain Name Extension Examples
Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLD) .COM, .NET, .INFO, .ORG
Generic Restricted Top-Level Domains .BIZ, .NAME and .PRO
Sponsored Top-Level domains (sTLD) .EDU, .GOV, .TEL, .JOBS
Country Top-level domains .QA for Qatar and.TR for Turkey.
Reserved Top-level Domains .INT, .TEST & .EXAMPLE

Seven tips to use when picking a domain name for your blog

  • Extension: The .com extension is the most advisable to use in a blog because it is memorable, universal and prioritized by Google.
  • Length: Stick to less than 15 characters. A length domain confuses your blog readers because it is hard to remember and type on search engines.
  • Simplicity: Avoid complicated names, keep it natural and memorable.
  • Keywords: Where possible add your target keyword in the domain name.
  • Special characters: only stick to letters and numbers to avoid confusing your readers.
  • Domain name search and generation: In case you are lack ideas for the perfect domain name, there are many domain name generators, such as Namestation and DomainsBot to crowdsource for ideas and suggestions.
  • Domain name availability: Use the right tools, such as Domainr and NameVine to find out if your chosen domain is available for use and not taken by another blogger.

3. Choose web hosting service provider for your blog

Free Web Hosting

The upside is that it is free with zero costs, but the disadvantage is that it is less secure, has low customization options, and you have little control.

Free web hosting is offered by several companies, such as WordPress.com, Wix.com, X10Hosting.com, AwardSpace.com.

My advice: This is good if you will treat your blog as a hobby, but if you want to build a money-making blog business keep off this hosting.

Shared Web Hosting

Multiple hosting websites utilize one single server resources. The advantage is that it is pocket and beginner- friendly.

My advice: This is the best option to choose to start a blog and make money. Once your blog traffic grows, you can upgrade to a higher choice.

Best VPS hosting providers: BlueHostHostgatorSiteGround, InMotionA2Hosting, and LiquidWeb.

4. Selecting a blogging platform

how-to-start-a-blog-and-make-money-in-ten-steps-blogging-platforms

I know it is easy to get confused here because some of you might be asking the difference between a blog hosting provider and platform.

Learning how to start a blog and make money with it means clearing all doubts and understanding all facts.

A blog hosting will provide your website resources a server where they can be stored and accessed by search engines or browsers every time a user requests resources from your website.

On the other hand, a blogging platform is an environment where you can use to create posts and manage other resources in your blog.

Types of blogging platforms

There are free and paid/ self-hosted blogging platforms, see a list of the best in the two categories below;

Note that: Most free blogging platforms have paid/self-hosted options which you can upgrade to later. WordPress.org is the most recommended platform for bloggers. Find out why here.

Why you should not use a free blogging platform to start a blog and make money

  • They have limited capabilities and customization options
  • Low monetization potential because you will not be able to display ads and other monetization methods.
  • If the blogging platform closes or something happens to it, you lose everything making it insecure.
  • Little or no support such that if you experience a problem, you are on your own.
  • Most of these platforms have little trust and low reputation, which can easily damage your reputation to your target audience.
  • Most have limited resources, blogging tools, and design customization options.

Note that: This does not mean you should not start your blog if you have zero capital you can always begin in a free blogging platform but do not forget the disadvantages above. Also, remember that creating a self-hosted blog is very cheap starting from as little as $3.95 per month.

What are long tail keywords?

There are three types of keywords: Head/seed, Body/Middle, and long tail keywords.

CHARACTERISTICS HEAD/SEED BODY/MIDDLE LONG TAIL
1.     Length One-word generic terms 2-3 words phrases 3+ words search queries
2.     Search volume High Medium Low
3.     Competition High High to Medium Low
4.     CTR and conversion Low Low to Medium High
5.     Example “Business” “Online business.” “Online business ideas for beginners.”

Why long tail keywords are important

  • Low competition so you can easily rank on SERPs for these phrases.
  • They have high CTR, conversions, and open rates because they represent buyer’s intent and are more specific search phrases with a buying motive.
  • More sales because they are more descriptive and deliver targeted traffic and specific audiences to your website.
  • This is how people search the internet.
  • They give you a competitive advantage because big brands are trying to rank for short phrases (head and body keywords).
